Twerking, booty popping, juking, jerking, or whatever you wanna call the “bending over with hands on your knees or just half bended over dance while your butt and hips move” dance or “feet on the wall while your booty shakes” etc has been around for like more than 20 years. I mean there were songs such as “rump shaker” by wrecks n effect, “back dat a$$ up” by Juvenile, “Check on it” by Beyonce, “Shake your tail-feather” by P.Diddy, Nelly, and the St.Lunatics, Snoop Dogg and Pharell had “Drop it like it’s hot” etc. Now I’m not name dropping songs to show that I know them and I know there are plenty of other songs that are about booty shaking, but my point is when I was growing up (I’m a 90s baby) songs like these came on and people enjoyed themselves, females of all race, ethnicity, shapes and sizes did the dance for fun and it was normal, by the time I was 13 I knew how to booty shake and I wasn’t looked down upon for knowing how to do it because it didn’t define my character as a young woman, it was just a dance, and no it wasn’t only affiliated with being a stripper.
But today it seems like people look down on these types of dancing as if a dance move defines a person character, to me dancing is an art form no matter what kind of dancing it is and whether people believe it or not booty shaking dance is not as easy as it looks (which is why there are classes for it)People have said “oh this types of dancing degrade women” well the way a woman dance or what she does in/with her life doesn’t or shouldn’t define another woman, in fact it has nothing to do with any other woman, unless you’re a woman that can’t think for yourself. If a woman chooses to shake her a$$(twerk) on the stage, in private, or post herself on YouTube it shouldn’t effect all women.
So my questions are why are people making such a big negative deal about twerking or booty shaking? Why is it being looked down upon, why are females being judged and being called trashy, slutty, ratchet for doing it? When it’s just a dance that’s been around for years just under different names for different generations.
